*Our old growth Redwood is salvaged from stumps, burls and logs left behind to rot at the turn of the century. It has a deeper, richer color and tighter graining than second and third growth Redwood that is being harvested now. It is all sourced from logs, stumps or burls that were left behind 100-150 years ago when loggers used to cut down trees from springboards, 10-15’ up the trunk, because mills didn’t want the curly grain of the lower section. Due to Redwood’s resistance to rot, these massive stumps are still sound and beautiful today. While it is a finite resource, we can either leave it in the forest to eventually rot away, or salvage it and transform it to functional works of art that last for generations. Each piece will have its own individuality, no two pieces are alike.
In rare cases you will find a burl or log that has turned black all the way through, or coming in from the edges. This is a result of these logs being submerged in a creek or river for many years. The minerals from the soil leaching into the creeks and rivers cause the dark color, adding a rare kind of beauty to the piece.
